To Be Niche or Not to Be: The Catastrophic Consequences of Gen Z’s Trend Toward Originality
A strongly critical note on the new “niche” project “Egg Culture”
Behind the scenes, discussions continue over the leading contender for “Word of the Year.” According to RIA Novosti, citing an expert from the Russian Ministry of Education, in 2026 the word “niche” will indisputably prevail in frequency of use. The term’s meteoric rise is astonishing: from “a recess in a wall” — in the familiar understanding of the older generation — to “refined, specialized, and original” — which is precisely how young people interpret “nicheness.”
At first glance, the situation does not seem critical: once again, zoomers have seized upon an infantile trend in an attempt to withstand turbulence on the world stage. Let us, however, dispense with the layman’s view and turn directly to the facts. The claim to originality has become nothing short of the plague of twenty-first-century youth. The desire to stand out from the crowd at any cost is reaching caricatural proportions and causing a sense of justified concern among their elders.
One of the unprecedented projects that quickly won the attention of five representatives of “niche” youth is a resource called “Egg Culture.”
Having analyzed a countless number of dictionary entries, the author managed to establish that the project’s founders openly and shamelessly declare their affiliation with the sexual philosophy of the decaying West, which also raises questions about possible foreign funding for the project. Whether “Egg Culture” will receive foreign-agent status in the near future remains anyone’s guess.
It is obvious that the website was founded on its authors’ confidence that they possess “refined taste and interesting hobbies,” something quite characteristic of people aspiring to be called “niche.” The desire to separate themselves from the majority of sensible citizens is evident on the resource’s very first page:
“The egg is too quiet for an age of shouting. Too whole for an age of fragments. We are not obliged to explain to everyone what it is”
In other words, leave your averagely defective adult thoughts behind and concentrate on what truly matters — the egg. The childishness and naivety of such an approach are striking. Apparently, the project’s authors are not burdened by the concerns that make up the daily bread of a mature and established person. They most certainly do not need to arrive at work at nine in the morning, wake early to take children to school, pay for doctors, or even for popcorn. So how should they occupy their time? With pseudo-intellectual reflections on the nature and essence of the egg, of course.
To heighten the effect of nicheness and draw a veil over the user’s perception, the resource employs an internal language: “verticality,” “grounding,” “albumen cloud,” “industrial stream,” and so forth. Everyone knows from their school days that this is precisely what good old manipulation looks like: if you want to appear intelligent, play an unfamiliar term as your trump card. Of course, the creators tried to deflect suspicions of Machiavellianism by producing a glossary. But the reader cannot be deceived: every text on the resource is strewn with verbal novelties, while cross-links to definitions are absent; the only way to understand what is being discussed is to break away from the narrative each time and consult the glossary. This presentation deliberately complicates the text, confirming the authors’ manipulative intentions.
Furthermore, this device is used to create an expert and authoritative image of the speaker. A simple thought, presented in a complicated manner, obstructs comprehension; the reader begins to believe in the author’s superiority on the one hand and in their own incompetence on the other. Asymmetry in dialogue is a clear sign of a destructive cult, if not a sect.
Instilling the sense that the project’s creators possess secret knowledge while their students remain ignorant quickly leads to the formation of codependent relationships and the exploitation of some by others. Before long, the once equal friend and comrade becomes an “oracle” and gently offers to guide you — first on the question of an egg’s resonance, and then on transferring the deed to a three-room apartment in Khamovniki.
So is the trend toward “nicheness” merely another wrapper for the desire to dominate and submit? To attract attention, live inside elaborate imaginary concepts, and avoid real action? While some — with the archetype of the ruler or polemicist — seek to erase themselves from the ranks of gray ordinariness, others are forced to resist fashionable currents with all their might, hoping deep down that someday this epic entitled “War and Peace” will come to an end.
